Background of the Study

Stroke is a major cause of disability and pain for many patients, yet effective pain management remains a challenge in many healthcare settings, especially in resource-constrained areas. Pain management for stroke patients requires a multifaceted approach, which includes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods. This study aims to evaluate the barriers to effective pain management among stroke patients in Benue State healthcare facilities.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of guidelines for pain management, many stroke patients in Benue State continue to experience unmanaged pain, which can lead to worsened outcomes, delayed recovery, and lower quality of life. Understanding the barriers to effective pain management is essential for improving care and ensuring that stroke patients receive adequate pain relief.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the barriers to effective pain management in stroke patients in Benue State healthcare facilities.

  2. To evaluate the current practices and protocols used by nurses in pain management for stroke patients.

  3. To identify solutions that can improve pain management practices for stroke patients in the state.

Research Questions

  1. What are the barriers to effective pain management for stroke patients in Benue State healthcare facilities?

  2. How do nurses currently manage pain for stroke patients in Benue State hospitals?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve pain management in stroke patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There are significant barriers to effective pain management among stroke patients in Benue State, including insufficient training, lack of resources, and inadequate pain management protocols.

  2. Nurses in Benue State healthcare facilities do not fully adhere to pain management best practices for stroke patients.

  3. Implementing training programs and improving resources can significantly enhance pain management practices for stroke patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on stroke patients in Benue State healthcare facilities. Limitations include possible biases in self-reported pain management practices and challenges in assessing pain accurately in patients with varying levels of stroke severity.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pain Management: The process of providing medical care that alleviates or manages pain through pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic interventions.

  • Stroke: A medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, leading to potential brain damage, disability, and pain.
